Benedictine University’s Campus Ministry has opened a Food Pantry for all students who are in need of assistance. The pantry is based in Kindlon 410.

This was made possible by an Abbey Endowment Grant, which is designed to support Benedictine’s mission.

“As caring for our students’ basic needs is one of the many ways we live out our hallmarks of Love of Christ and Neighbor, community, and hospitality, creating the BenU Food Pantry was a natural step,” says Carrie Ankeny, Director of Campus Ministry.

They were awarded the grant in April 2021 and on Wednesday, September 8th a Grand Opening and Blessing of the BenU Food Pantry commenced.

Receiving support from the Benedictine community and many community members, many have donated canned goods, toiletries, specialty items, and feminine hygiene products. Campus Ministry is working on a partnership with BenU’s Nutrition Department, the student SAND Organization, and several others to increase awareness about the issue seeing that 25-33 percent of college students are food insecure.

Food insecurity means that a person does not know where their next meal will come from.

If a student is in need they can walk into the BenU Food Pantry. It is open Monday – Friday from 7 am – 9 pm. Bags are provided from the students inside of the pantry.

“Our BenU Food Pantry currently follows the policy of “take what you need.” If you are in need of food, we are here to assist,” says Ankeny.

The Food Pantry is anonymous. Campus Ministry wants to provide a sense of comfort for students while visiting the food pantry. There is no have of sign-in sheet, the pantry is based upon the honor system.

It is encouraged to fill out the anonymous survey out after a visit. The survey is to help Campus Ministry better understand students’ needs, what items they feel are missing from the food pantry, and how we can better serve them with this resource.

The survey can be found here:
