Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP after scoring three touchdowns.
After Patrick Mahomes was intercepted by Tarvarius Moore, ESPN gave the 49ers a 91.9% chance to win the Super Bowl with 11 minutes and 57 seconds remaining. A few minutes later, that number spiked to a 95.3% chance that the 49ers were going to take home the Lombardi trophy. However, the Chiefs defied the formula and scored 21 points in the 4th quarter to win the Super Bowl.
The 49ers were in control for most of this game. Linebacker Fred Warner intercepted a Mahomes pass intended for Tyreek Hill. The 49ers turned this opportunity into points by scoring six plays later with a touchdown run by Raheem Mostert. This gave the 49ers a 20-10 lead.
They would hold onto that lead until under three minutes left in the game when Damien Williams caught a touchdown pass from Mahomes that gave the Chiefs a 24-20 lead. After turning the ball over on downs, Williams broke free for a 38-yard touchdown that sealed the victory for the Chiefs.
It was the Chiefs third comeback of the playoffs this season. In the AFC Championship game, they trailed by 10 to the Tennessee Titans before winning 35-24. The Houston Texans even had a 24-point lead before the Chiefs came roaring back to win 51-31.
After a rough start, Mahomes finished the day with 286 passing yards and 3 total touchdowns. The stats were enough to give him the MVP award. At 24 years old, he became the youngest Super Bowl MVP in history.
“We kept believing,” Mahomes said after the game. “The guys really stepped up. They believed in me. I was making a lot of mistakes out there early. We found a way to win it in the end.”
The Super Bowl win was the Chiefs first in 50 years, but many believe more Super Bowl success is near. After the game, Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones spoke about it.
“This is the beginning of something, baby” Jones said. “This is a dynasty.”
Jones may not be far off. The Chiefs opened as favorites to win the next Super Bowl. If Mahomes continues to stay healthy, this may not be his last Super Bowl MVP award.
