Atatiana Jefferson, a 28-year-old pre-med African American woman was fatally shot through the window of her home on October 12, 2019. Jefferson was at home playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew who was in the room when she was shot. A non-emergency call was made at 2:25 am when a neighbor noticed that the front doors of the house were left open. Police officer Aaron Dean responded to the call with a colleague. Body cam footage showed him approaching the house, surveying the scene, and then approaching the window to Jefferson’s bedroom with his gun in place before shooting her. “I’m shaken. I’m mad. I’m upset. And I feel it’s partly my fault. If I had never dialed the police department, she’d still be alive.” stated James Smith, Jefferson’s neighbor. The officer who shot Jefferson claimed to have perceived a threat, however, no such evidence was found on the body cam. Dean resigned before he could be interviewed by his department.
A New Orleans hotel that was under construction collapsed on Saturday, killing 2 and injuring 30 more. While the hotel was last inspected September 24th, engineers are still trying to figure out what went wrong. The Hard Rock Hotel began to collapse on the lower floors while many construction workers were still inside. Tim McConnell, Fire Chief of the New Orleans fire department stated that the site is still very dangerous and many of the rescue team members are putting their lives at risk as they search for more bodies. The building had many cranes and scaffolding around it, posing an even bigger threat as those may become unstable and fall if not removed quickly. When asked about the collapse, the hotel responded “Citadel Builders LLC was contracted by Kailas Companies, owner of the project, to build the Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans based on a brand licensing agreement with Hard Rock International, the future manager of the hotel,” the company said. “Hard Rock has had no involvement in the construction of the project. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to victims of this tragic accident and to their loved ones and friends.”
