A late rally from the Benedictine Football team earned them a 43-37 win this past weekend when they faced Olivet College in a non-conference match-up at the Lisle Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Eagles record to 4-3 on the season.
After falling behind at the start of the second half, the Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the game on their way to the victory. A failed Hail Mary attempt by Olivet College in the final seconds of the game sealed the six point victory for the Eagles.
The Eagles were led by Senior Quarterback Ryan Sample who finished the day with 317 passing yards and three touchdowns. Sample connected on 24 different passes, seven of which were caught by Wide Receiver Brandon Moore. Moore had 115 yards receiving and caught two touchdown passes on the day while also returning a punt for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
On the defensive side of the ball, Freshman Safety Tyreese Fontanez and Senior Linebacker Victor Johnson led the Eagles defense with 13 tackles each on the day. Senior Linebacker Austin Nirva also chipped in with 12 tackles, two of which were for a loss.
“We were proud of the way we fought and never gave up,” said Sample about the win, “We executed our assignments well and we took care of the ball. We also played well collectively on our special teams units which contributed to the win.
