After posting the best record for Benedictine baseball since the 2013 season (24-18), the baseball team sent five players to continue playing in the Northwoods League and the Prospect League. In these leagues, the Benedictine players played against top players from around the country and followed in the footsteps of players such as Chris Sale, Ben Zobrist, and Max Scherzer, who were discovered in these leagues.
Frank Greco, Benedictine’s leader in wins for the 2017 season with a record of 8-2, signed a contract with the Bismark Larks of North Dakota for the summer. Greco appeared in 11 games for the Larks, and was one of four players on the Larks who remained on the team for the duration of the season. Other players were either released or were signed to shorter contracts, which were not renewed by the Larks.
“It was a great experience, and I learned a lot playing for the Larks this summer,” said Greco, “I hope to be able to take what I learned in the Northwoods League and have it translate to the field here this season at Benedictine.”
Greco was not the only player from the team to play in a league of that caliber this summer. Senior Catcher D.J. Dillon posted an on base percentage of .381 for the Champion City Kings this summer. Sophomores James Wright, Jimmy McLaughlin, and Drake Berman also played partial seasons for Champion City.
The Benedictine baseball team looks to improve on their 24-18 record this spring with these five players leading the way. Coach Adam Smith in his first two seasons as Benedictine’s Head Coach has compiled a 44-38 record.
