The Pre-Dental Club gives students and faculty a reason to smile.
February is Children’s Dental Awareness Month. This past Monday, February 22, Benedictine University’s Pre-Dental Club was posted in the Kindlon Atrium to raise awareness on dental hygiene. President of the club, Afreen A-hmed, was at the table interacting with students and faculty passing by and informing them about the importance of teaching the youth about oral hygiene.
But the event was not all about the recruitment and information. The club was also giving out sweet treats such chocolate, pens, pins, and toothpaste. There were also little interactive games and charts showing students the long term effects of bad oral hygiene habits.
“We have our game to promote good eating habits, to eat foods that are good for your teeth as well as your body. We are also giving away toothpaste to encourage and promote health oral hygiene habits. The chocolate is to promote a healthy balance of sweets and healthy foods,” said Ahmed.
The Pre-Dental Club has just started a new chapter with America’s ToothFairy Foundation. This is a foundation that believes that every child deserves a healthy smile. Everyone works hard to promote the importance of oral health and its link to overall systemic health.
“It’s nice that they are being proactive about this issue. I think oral hygiene is very important because it can affect your life span. So it is very important to take care of your mouth and to start young,” said junior Christina Schrott.
Any students interested in joining the Pre-Dental Club or just want to receive more information are encouraged to join in the general body meetings which are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in Birck 007 from 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.
“We have a general body meeting next Thursday with a visit from University of Detroit Mercy (USD) School of Dentistry,” said Ahmed. “There is going to be advising sessions with the director of admissions from USD as well.”
