The Republican candidate Ben Carson said on October 25 that rape and incest are still not reasons to consider abortion.
According to USA Today, Carson says that abortion should only be considered in rare cases such as health of the mother’s. “If people can come up with a reasonable explanation of why they would like to kill a baby, I’ll listen.”
The instances of rape or incest are two reasons why women may consider abortion, but to Carson, he still doesn’t believe those reasons to be enough to consider abortion. The Washington Post reports that Carson had compared abortion to slave owners. “During slavery, a lot of the slave owners thought they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave, anything that they chose to do. And what if the abolitionists had said: ‘You know, I don’t believe in slavery. I think it’s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do’? Where would we be?” To compare abortion to slavery seems uncommon and more than likely, crazy.
Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision was what legalized abortion and Carson wants that law to be overturned. The law allows women the choice to choose abortion or not, but for Carson to say he wants to overturn that is something a man should not have the choice to make. Carson also mentions that rape and incest would never be a reason he’d consider abortion to be the solution to.
The Washington Post reports Carson stating, “Rape and incest I would not be in favor of killing a baby because the baby came about in that way. Many stories of people who have led very useful lives who were the result of rape or incest.”
On multiple occasions, Carson has made controversial statements. This statement about abortion being one of them. During his interview on “Meet the Press,” Carson has mentioned his comments “resonate with people who aren’t really thinking deeply.” If anything, Carson looks like the one to not really be thinking deeply.
