Northern Arizona University Shooting

by Reem Ibrahim

On Friday morning, one student was fatally shot and three others were injured by the hands of a shooter on the campus of Northern Arizona University. According to the Huffington Post, police identified the shooter as 18-year old Steven Jones who was a freshman at the university.
The shooting had originally began as a fight, which escalated into a shooting when Jones retrieved a hand gun from his vehicle. The Northern Arizona University police chief, Greg Fowler mentioned that the Arizona Board of Regents allows students to carry guns in their car, but not with them on campus. The confrontation had been one of many during the week, as violence and threats against college students were happening across the country.
The Washington Post reported that Delta Chi’s international headquarters confirmed a statement that the three students who had been injured are members of the fraternity. Jones is not a member of the fraternity. The reason behind the unfortunate event still remains to be unclear. Jones faces a first-degree murder charge as well as three counts of aggravated assault.
It’s unfortunate that mass shootings are becoming such a frequent thing, and according to an article by The New York Times, “mass shootings are no longer viewed by researchers as isolated incidents: Experts who have analyzed hundreds of past shootings have said that the probability of another attack was highest in the two weeks after a killing was publicized.” President Obama had acknowledged the topic of mass shootings, after the Oregon shooting. “Somehow this has become routine, the reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine. The conversation in the aftermath of it. We’ve become numb to this.”
Many students attending Northern Arizona University took to social media to send their condolences to the families of the victims. Arizona Senator McCain expressed condolences as well in a report made by ABC 15. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families,” he stated.
