How to Avoid the Freshmen 15

With the new freshman class entering the classrooms of Benedictine University, it is important to address the dreaded freshman 15. There are various tips as to how to avoid gaining extra weight, but how can you know which tips to follow?  Being a sophomore in college I have some experience with this issue. The following are some personal tips I have found to be effective in staying healthy during your first year of college:

Choose Healthy Options in Dining Hall

The true struggle with the dining hall is that there are so many options to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are many unhealthy foods like pizza, hamburgers and ice cream that are tempting. However, there are healthier options available in the cafeteria. There are a variety of fruits and vegetables available to students in Krasa, the coffee shop and Coal Ben. Maybe you can choose the salad bar over the frozen yogurt machine.

Try to Hit the Gym

The Fitness Center is free for faculty members and students. You can go to the gym as much as you want for no cost. On the first floor there are bikes, treadmills, stair master, ellipticals, and some weights. If you are more interested in toning your muscles, the second level is for you. It is full of weight lifting machines. Not only are the machines available for students, but there are also free weights for students to use. So, whenever you aren’t in class and need to take a physical break from your studies, the Fitness Center is a great place to go.

If you don’t like doing your own workout because you do not know which type of workout is for you, there are various classes available at the Fitness Center. From Yoga to Zumba, it seems to be one of the more popular choices for students.

These tips were helpful to me, so I hope you too can benefit from them. The changes might be slightly small when you first start, but they will soon become more noticeable as time goes on. These changes can help change your self-confidence both physically and emotionally. Avoiding the freshman 15 is truly a great feeling to have. It shows you can do anything you put your  mind to. Whether it be trying not to gain 15 pounds or studying hard to get that good grade on a test, confidence and determination is truly the key to getting something done.
