Kristen Gillespie accepted a position to the head coach at Lewis University and recently Charlie Averkamp has been selected to be the new head coach for women’s basketball. Gillespie has coached for Benedictine’s women’s basketball for four years with last season’s winnings of 18.

According to the press release from Benedictine Athletics Gillespie stated, “Words cannot express my love for Benedictine University. Over the past four years I was extremely fortunate to work for and with some of the most outstanding people in athletics. I want to thank Mark McHorney and Marco Masini for giving me the opportunity to coach at Benedictine. I also wish to thank all of the young women that I have had the opportunity to coach who made this experience rewarding. I will always treasure my time at Benedictine.”

Avercamp previously was an assistant coach for women’s basketball at Concordia University Wisconsin for four years. Avercamp is part of the 98 wins and 74 in conference. He was also a recruiting coordinator and coached 12 conference players.

In the same press release, the head coach of the men’s basketball Keith Bunkenburg stated, “I am very excited about having Coach Avercamp part of the Benedictine Athletic family. He is coming from a great program and has worked under one of the best coaches in the NACC and the country. I am looking forward to working with him and know the women’s program will be in good hands. He is inheriting a great group of women who will challenge for the conference title again this year.”

Avercamp was a player in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference at Edgewood college. He gained his way up during his junior year where he made the first triple-double in conference history. He began his coaching as an assistant at Edgewood for the men’s program in 2008-2009.
