Women’s Lacrosse won a game against Wartburg College last Saturday. The win secured them in first place for the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference tournament.
“Wartburg was an exciting game. We knew that if we won, we would make it to the playoffs for the first time in history! If we did not win, we knew our season would be over, so a lot of us got emotional before the game. I think that is what really fueled us to come out strong and beat them,” said junior Samantha Link.
Link made the first two goals to start off the lead for Benedictine in the first half. Wartburg scored a goal then another goal followed by sophomore Becca Gullet. Wartburg made another goal before the first half ended. By the end of the first half the score became 3-2.
Five goals in a row were made by Benedictine in the second half. Gullet with the assist of junior Gabby Rowe, scored the fourth goal. Junior Nikki Gullet, with the assist of Link, followed with the next goal for Benedictine. Link scored the next goal. Another goal was scored by Gullet, with the assist of Rowe. The final goal that sealed the win for Benedictine was scored by Gullet, with another assist from Rowe. The final score was 8-2.
Link and Gullet each scored three goals during this game, with Gullet also making four turnovers. Rowe and Junior Lauren Ligocki collected four groundballs. Sophomore Hannah Smith made three saves.
“I am excited for the women’s lacrosse team to advance to the playoffs. This is an exciting time for them. They worked hard this season and have come a long way. Good luck ladies,” said senior Mike Krueger.
The next game for Women’s Lacrosse will be against Concordia University Wisconsin on May 1 at 1 p.m. in Wisconsin.
