This month is sexual awareness month which means it’s time for people to be on the lookout of sexual violence in the country. In our society today, there have been many cases where people have been harassed because of their sexuality. Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights, and social justice issue that exists within our society. The National Sexual Violence resource center offers several programs to help bring the issues to light and educate the nation about the importance of taking a stand and being a part of the solution to ending sexual violence.
As early as 1976, Take Back the Night marches rallied women in an organized protest against rape and sexual assault, according to the center’s website. Over time, these types of protests coordinated into a movement across the United States and Europe that meant more activities being put together to raise awareness of violence against women. The website then stated on the sexual awareness month page that in the late 1980s, the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault informally polled state sexual assault coalitions to determine the preferred date for a national Sexual Assault Awareness Week. They continued on to talk about how by the late 1990s, many advocates began to plan activities and events throughout the month of April. It is this time of year where individuals come together to raise awareness of sexual violence and different sexual orientations. There are many ways in which one can do this and no matter what they do, it can become truly effective to other people.
Some people who are victimized of sexual violence could be a person that you know personally. If this is the case, then something that you could do is to spend some personal time with them. Having a personal conversation where the other person tells you the issues that are being brought up for them because of sexual issues. This will make them feel good because they will have someone to tell their problems to and you will be there to provide answers to the issues at hand.
Once you know some basic information about the cases of sexual abuse that exist in our society today, you can make your voice heard to the public. There are different ways you can do because of the increasing numbers of social media websites being on the internet today. You can share links to websites that tell different stories about sexual abuse cases on your Facebook wall. You can tweet facts about the number of cases that take place within a given year on your Twitter.
During this month, there are different campaigns created by organizations to help people have their voices united as one. Whether it would be putting together events that others can get together or signing a petition, united voices create a powerful message for other people out there to hear. People can listen to the message being created so they can spread it to others who haven’t heard of the news yet.
If you don’t find a way to be a part of the campaign, you can start your own campaign. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a large-scale event, it can be a small event that takes place within your community. That way, there are could be more people become more aware of the message that you are trying to send out. The main point of the mission is the more people that become aware of the issue at hand, the better chance they will come together to come up with a solution for the problem.
