Bruce Jenner. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear this name? Many people praise him as the former Olympic gold medalist and many others know him as the famous step father of the Kardashian clan. Whatever the case may be, Bruce Jenner is one of the most widely known celebrities today. Now, 65 year old Jenner came out with a secret this past weekend that shocked the nation.
ABC’s Diane Sawyer had an exclusive interview with Jenner about how is finally coming out as a woman. He had been keeping this secret from the world for decades now and feels like he can’t hide it any longer. Jenner states during the interview, “For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman” he says loud and proud. Jenner also told Sawyer that he has been struggling with being transgender since his childhood. People looked at him as this athletic man, so he felt that it was necessary to hide the other female side of him.
I watched this interview not knowing what to expect. Before people even took this news seriously, I kept hearing whispers about him probably doing this as a publicity stunt since he is officially separated from Kris. Many thought he needed more camera attention and this was the only way he knew how to get it. But as the interview continued, there was a lot of tearing and sobbing on Bruce’s part. There was a lot of pain that he went through telling his story finally, and I couldn’t help but sympathize for this man who felt that he didn’t belong in this society for decades. A person that the world praised, a person who is so loved by many didn’t feel like he belonged. That was such a shocking idea to comprehend.
Jenner also stated during the interview “my brain is much more female than it is male and it’s hard for people to understand that, but that’s what my soul is.” People who don’t understand the idea of a transgender may not know how to comprehend this statement either. Our society today still struggles with accepting people out of the norm. Yes we are headed towards a stronger direction where people are accepted, but there are many who still do not. Bruce’s voice is going to support many transgender people out there today who struggle with their sexuality on a daily basis. It’s going to help them finally speak up and tell the world about their issues and help others just like them. People thought that Bruce was just an average man for decades, but for the transgender world to know that someone so great is just like them, helps their self-esteem and become more comfortable
