The Benedictine softball team took on Aurora University last week in a battle of conference rivals. Unfortunately the Lady Eagles found themselves on the losing end of a doubleheader sweep, losing in game one 7-2 and in game two 8-7.
“These were two tough losses. I do not think we came out with the right mindset, but our mistakes will help us grow as a team. Next time we play them, we will definitely be more than ready,” said Melissa Stoch.
Through the first couple innings it looked as though it would be a pitcher’s duel, AU got to BU pitcher Holly Haberkorn for two runs in the third inning. The Spartans scored again an inning later to extend their lead to three runs.
The Lady Eagles broke their scoreless spell in the fifth inning scoring on a Sarah Koch double; however, the Spartans stamped out any hopes of a comeback when they brought their lead to 7-1 in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lady Eagles scored again on Jenna Boyajian’s second home run of the season, but that’s where the scoring stopped.
In game two the Eagles got off to a great start, taking their first lead of the day scoring two runs. The Spartans answered quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs. BenU scored again in the third only to be matched once again by AU in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lady Eagles finally pulled away behind the strength of Melissa Guzior, who shut down the Spartans after coming in relief of starting pitcher, Eryn Pondo. The lady Eagles pushed their lead to 7-3 behind a Koch RBI single in the fourth, an RBI single by Boyajian and two run double from Shannon Fritsche.
Guizor was cruising until the seventh inning where Aurora mounted a comeback, eventually winning the game in walk off fashion on an RBI single.
“Although things did not fall the way we wanted to, I know that we will come back even stronger in the conference tournament and beat them when it matters most,” said Pondo.
These two games were the first two conference losses for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles, however, were back to their winning ways and was able to take away two wins from both their double headers from this past weekend when they faced Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wisconsin Lutheran. Women’s softball will be on the road as they face North Park University this Wednesday in Chicago at 3 p.m.
