Women’s lacrosse won their first game of the season when they played against Cornell College last Friday afternoon.
“Friday was definitely our best game of the season so far. We played as a team both on defense and attack for a full 60 minutes. This is the first time we put a full game together. Usually we have lapses for a few minutes here and there. Our goalie played amazing as well. We did not want to take a road trip all the way to Iowa before Easter break without coming back with a win,” said senior Kam Haifleigh.
Sophomore Becca Gullett scored the first goal in the first half of the game, which started the lead for Benedictine. Cornell scored a goal, which created a tie between both teams. Benedictine proceeded to score three goals in a row before Cornell could score another goal. Junior Gabby Rowe, Junior Samanthaa Link, and Sophomore Gullett made those goals. By the end of the first half the score became 4-2.
Cornell advanced by scoring two points in a row to create another tie with Benedictine. Before the second half ended, Benedictine made two final goals. Sophomore Gullett scored one and Junior Link sealed the final point for the Benedictine’s win. The final score became 6-4.
“This was a great win for the women’s lacrosse team. I really enjoy watching them play as a team. They have such strong chemistry. Congratulations on your first win of the season!” said senior Gina Doughney.
Sophomore Hannah Smith made nine saves. Sophomore Gullett scored three goals, made three ground balls, and made three draw controls. Junior Link two goals.
The next game for women’s lacrosse will be on campus on April 12 against Augsburg College at 11 a.m.
