Women’s Lacrosse loses Season Opener

By: Zack Bucher

The Benedictine Women’s Lacrosse team opened their season with a 24-4 loss to the University of Dubuque this past Saturday.
“It was a rocky start to the season, but there is plenty of potential for improvement. The team culture this year is great. I am really excited for what this season has in store. Despite the turnout of the game, the team handled our loss really well and we have to focus on ourselves and moving forward,” said sophomore midfielder Becca Gullett.
Things started out well for the ladies as they grabbed an early lead with a goal by junior midfielder, Gabby Rowe. Unfortunately, the Lady eagles would not have the lead again, as Dubuque fired off a streak of 12 unanswered goals. The Lady Eagles would end the run late in the first half with a goal by junior attacker Samantha Link, bringing the halftime score to 14-2.
The second half did not bring anything new for the Lady Eagles. Junior attacker Samantha Link scored just two more times for the Lady Eagles while Dubuque scored ten more times.
Benedictine was outshot 38-14, as half of the team shots came from Link. Sophomore goalie Hannah Smith played the entire game and made seven saves.
“The women’s lacrosse game team really gave it their all on the field. It was a fun time in the stands cheering on the Lady Eagles in the cold weather and made for great memories with my friends,” said senior Mike Krueger.
The Lady Eagles look to bounce back when they travel to play Elmhurst Wednesday night. Currently, Benedictine women’s lacrosse holds a record of 0-1.
