The most exciting night in music is almost here (sorry, not sorry MTV Music Video Awards). The awards show that is often called, “the Oscars for singers” will premiere February 8 at 7 p.m. on CBS. The Grammys are popular because there are a variety of singers from different genres of music in one place. There will be 83 awards that will be given out this year, upping the 82 that was awarded last year.
Considering the host of this year’s show is still hush hush, we will all have to wait and see what goes down on that night. With six nominations each, Beyoncé, Sam Smith, and Pharrell are on top this year. This comes as no surprise since each star had a huge year in music. Pharrell’s “Happy” was heard everywhere and everyone was singing it, Beyoncé shock everyone when she came out with her surprise album, and Sam Smith’s music has been toping the charts. Beyoncé made the news as the first female to have the most nominations of all time. Iggy, Usher, Drake, and Sia each have four nominations. Chris Brown, Coldplay, Eminem, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran have three nominations respectively. Charli XCX, Adriana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, John Legend, Nicki Manji, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, and Kanye West who were also big hits this year, have two nominations. The artists who will be performing for the show is also being kept under the wraps.
I look at many different websites trying to find the performers. Until the show is close to being aired this information will not be release. What is known is there will be a tribute to Bob Dylan for MusiCares Person of the Year award. Some of the artists who will be performing the tribute will be Taj Mahal, Alanis Morissette, Aaron Neville, Bruce Springsteen, Susan Tedeschi, and Derek Truck and Jackson Brown. If you’re like me you probably have heard of a few people from the list and are wondering who the other artists are, we will have to tune in to the show to find out. While I am no expert after watching countless award shows over the years I have gotten good at guessing who will win the awards.
RECORD OF THE YEAR: As much as I love Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” this award will go to Iggy Azalea for “Fancy.” The song was heard on countless radio stations and it was catchy plus Taylor’s song is too new.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR: This was tough choice but I think this will be awarded to Beyoncé. Any artist who could come with an album without anyone knowing and still produce hit after hit deserves to win although I would want it to go to Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith.
SONG OF THE YEAR: This should definitely go to John Legend for “All of Me.” This was his first number one song and winning a Grammy for it would be a nice way to top it. Who does not love a good love ballad?
BEST NEW ARTIST: This should go to Sam Smith it seems like a no-brainer but with the Grammy’s and this category, which we are all rooting for never wins. The past couple of Grammys are an example of this, Lorde, Nicki, and Justin Bieber were expected to win but all lost.
BEST ROCK SONG: As a huge Paramore fan I think they should win for “Ain’t it Fun.”
Tune in to the show for what will for sure be a great show and hopefully I am right on my predictions.
