After a season-long draught, the Benedictine women’s lacrosse team has won their first conference game against their rival, Aurora University on Tuesday, April 22nd.

This is the first game that the Eagles have come out victorious since their second game of the season against the Illinois Institute of Technology.

At the start of the first 30-minute half, the Spartans were looking to close the game early with a goal just three minutes into the game. The Eagles’ Hannah Payne answered with a goal 40 seconds later, telling the Spartans that Benedictine was not going down without a fight. Payne scored another goal almost halfway through the half and her teammate, Gabby Rowe scored with just over six minutes left until halftime. Unfortunately, the Spartans outshot the Eagles and scored six goals to the Eagles’ three.

The Eagles held their heads high and made up for all the goals against in the second half. Taylor Pugliese scored for the Eagles three minutes into the second half. The Spartans responded with two goals in their attempt to hang onto their four-point lead. Payne and Samatha Link scored back-to-back goals midway through the half not allowing the Spartans to gain a larger lead.

The Spartans scored their final goal with seven minutes left in the game to make the score 9-6. Then, Payne and Link dominated the scoring for the rest of the game. Link scored two more and Payne scored one more to tie up the game and give their team a chance to win in overtime. Finally, Rowe scored the final goal for her team to win 10-9.

The Eagles will be playing Fontbonne University in Missouri on May 26th and then they will finish their season at home on May 29th at home.
