This week in Chicago sports

Since the Winter Olympics closed, many Blackhawks fans wondered how their team would perform now that a handful of players didn’t get time to rest between the gold-medal game and their first game back in the NHL.

Their question was answered on February 27th when the Hawks played the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden.  The game ended in a loss for the Chicago hockey team, 2-1, with their only goal coming with 10 seconds left in the game.  The lone goal was scored by newcomer Peter Regin, who was acquired from the New York Islanders on February 6th.

The Hawks redeemed themselves on March 1st during the Outdoor Stadium Series game against the Pittsburg Penguins in Soldier Field.  They won, 5-1, battling against not only the Penguins, but also the fury of winter snow.  Every five minutes, the ice crew needed to come and scoop inches of snow so the teams could properly handle the puck and skate without the risk of tripping over snow banks.

The talk of that game was that it was the first game for Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby to face against each other. The two played together in the Olympics both in 2010 and 2014, but never faced each other because last season the two teams never played and the season before that, Crosby was out due to injury.

The scoreboard said 5-1 by the end of the game, but not a single Penguin scored a goal.  Their lone goal came from a mishandle from Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook which resulted in the puck sliding past goalie Corey Crawford.

Toews tallied two goals and one assist, Patrick Sharp scored the first goal, Bryan Bickell scored once, and Kris Versteeg scored to become the only Blackhawks player to score a goal in the United Center, Wrigley Field, and Solider Field.

The Bulls have been earning their fair share of victories as well, winning 10 of their previous 12 games.  After losing to the Miami Heat on February 23rd, the Bulls have started a winning streak.  They have gone up to four games after beating the New York Knicks, 109-90, on March 2nd. The Bulls are in second place in their Division and third place in their Conference with 22 games left in the regular season.

The baseball preseason is not off to a great start.  Both the White Sox and the Cubs had games on Saturday.  The Cubs had back-to-back games against the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the White Sox had a game against the Cleveland Indians. All three games were cancelled due to bad weather.

On Sunday, both teams played again. The Cubs played the Kansas City Royals and the White Sox played the Texas Rangers.  The Cubs lost their game with a final score of 5-3, and the White Sox, who were losing most of their game, came back to win in extra innings 9-7.
