The Benedictine baseball team has already begun to practice for their season. Their first game is March 8th against Carthage College. The Eagles will play their first three games before they travel down to Florida for the Central Florida Invitational.
Last season, the Eagles finished second in their conference with a record of 32 wins and 12 loses. This earned them an “at large” bid into the NCA tournament.
“An at large bid which come about with a combination of good record and strength of schedule. We had a real good year, but at the end of the season our pitching kind of fell off a little bit and that hurt us in the tournament,” explained head coach John Ostrowski.
Since last season, the baseball team lost quite a few players either due to graduation or transfers. The team also gained new players from transfers and new freshmen.
“We have a good core back [from last season] which makes us very excited about the upcoming season. Our challenges would be to fill in a couple of the people we lost, but I think we’re in good shape to fill their roles. We’ve got some good arms that we just need to put them on the right path to turn them into quality college players,” said Ostrowski.
The Eagles’ main goal, for this season, is to get to the Division III College World Series whether through an “at large” bid or through an automatic bid. Ostrowski said that this is a “hefty goal” because it has never been done for Benedictine baseball.
