College is where most people begin their journey towards the rest of their lives. College is where you decide careers, make lifelong friends, and learn things that you wouldn’t even imagine. Seems like a magical place doesn’t it? Hollywood does an interesting portrayal of “college life” by showing young adults partying and hanging out with friends most of the time, but there is so much more to it.
Attending a university opens up so many doors that can help you achieve goals in the future. Making friends and joining clubs will help you meet people that can help you get closer to the career goals that you have. It is very important not to be shy when meeting new people. That might shelter you from so many experiences that you may have with the new people you meet. Not just with new friends, but also in classes. Starting up a discussion with a professor and classmates can broaden not only your ideas, but also your classmates’ ideas on different subjects. That is one of the biggest aspects of college; learning about different ideas, cultures, religions, and people in a general sense.
Another important point of attending college is making sure to keep up with classes and do the best you can. As a freshman, it is not wise to skip classes and not study just because no one is watching you anymore. It is true that college gives you a lot more independence than high school, but the way you manage time and use that independence is the key to success. Keep in mind, to get to your career goals you must also keep up your GPA. Graduate schools love students who worked hard starting from their first semester and who are serious about their future. One of the best ways to study is to form group studies. Gather a few of your classmates so you can all share your knowledge and help each other before exams. This is one of the most successful ways to study. It also isn’t a bad way to meet new people as a freshman.
Lastly, don’t forget to have fun! College is some of the best years of your lives for most people, so make sure to experience as much as possible. Try putting yourself out there, join new clubs, and take classes that seem interesting to you. College is where you experiment and get out of your comfort zone. The experiences that you will go through the next four years will show what kind of person you truly are. Most people are so uncomfortable in high school because of the ridicule and mocking for people outside the social norms. In college, you find people from all kinds of cliques, and people don’t care to judge. This truly is the beginning of the next chapter in your life. This is where you will find yourself and lifelong buddies, so make sure to put yourself out there for everyone to appreciate!
