The Benedictine University men’s lacrosse team ended their inaugural season Sunday defeating the Panthers of Hanover College 18-12.

With the win the Eagles finished the season with a 7-9 overall record and were 5-5 in conference play which placed them sixth overall in the Midwest Lacrosse League standings.

During the game, Benedictine came out firing from the opening horn. Hanover’s lone lead, 2-1, was during a time when they were a man up. Rudy Berg quickly answered, and Benedictine would go on to score seven straight goals throughout the first and second quarters, before going into halftime with an 11-4 lead.

The Panthers from Hanover came out with a spark in the second half as they scored three consecutive to push the game to an 11-7 lead for the Eagles. However, their magic was quickly ended after the Eagles pulled away jumping out to an eight point lead eventually. In the game the Eagles were led by five goals from Zach MacLachlan and Connor Mersch. Rudy Berg scored three times and Robert Abbott scored and assisted two times. Jeffrey Smitheram stopped 19 shots in goal for the Eagles.

Overall the Eagles had some impressive individual stats within the conference as Mersch finished sixth overall in goals per game while also finishing ninth in points per game. Joining Mersch with impressive individual statistics was Robert Abbot who finished third overall in the conference in ground balls per game.
