How to take care of your mind and body during finals week

Finals week is one of the most important weeks of the semester. After working so hard for five long months, these exams make or break our grade. However, the only thing worse than finals week, is the week preceding it, and in the midst of the studying, we forget to take care of ourselves. Late nights filled with Red Bull and coffee are all too familiar during this time of year. However, one of the most important things you can do to retain information and to stay healthy is to make smart decisions during this time. The Candor encourages you to be healthy so that you feel and do your best when exam time comes around.

An obvious but important tip is to get enough rest. By taking an hour or so to yourself to relax in between studying, you’ll retain more information than if you were to stay up all night without taking a break. Another tip is to exercise. It may seem like a time consuming activity when you don’t have much time to spare, but it can actually leave you feeling more refreshed than any energy drink ever can! Instead of focusing your mind and energy on studying for 12 hours straight, take an exercise break to rejuvenate yourself. Lastly, don’t forget to eat right. Rather than reaching for a bag of chips, or a king size Kit Kat bar, snack on fruits and vegetables to keep your mind alert and focused.

We sometimes don’t realize that we can get the same effect that sugary foods give us through healthier choices. This is extremely important, especially during these next couple of weeks. Caffeine can only work for so long. Don’t use temporary solutions to solve your long-term problems. In the end, pulling an all-nighter using caffeine, sugar, or other unhealthy options will not help you retain the information as much as healthier choices, a good night’s sleep and studying ahead of time.

But the Candor urges you to not panic, and most definitely don’t give up. While it may seem like the tasks on your to-do list are exponentially growing and beginning to breathe down your neck, occupying your every thought, take a deep breath and remember that success comes to those who are patient. Tough times like these are the building blocks to the ultimate goal of where you want to be a few years from now, and if it wasn’t difficult, then everyone would do it. Good luck on finals and have a great summer!
