The Benedictine softball team enjoyed a pair of wins on Senior Day, sweeping Lakeland in a double header at the Sports Complex.
The Eagles struggled early in game one, falling behind 3-0 after four innings of play. The Benedictine offense was stagnant until the fifth inning, when Kailee Cable singled home Chelsea White and Ashley Parrot, bringing the Eagles back to within 3-2.
The score would remain the same heading into the bottom of the seventh, when Kelly Mieszala came up with a huge RBI single that scored White. This tied the game at 3-3 and sent it into extra innings. Melissa Guzior pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, allowing Benedictine a chance to win in the bottom half of the frame. It was a chance that they didn’t let slip by, as Nikki Powers singled to center field and Amanda Straka scored on a throwing error, giving the Eagles a 4-3 victory.
Game two was much less competitive, as Benedictine wasted no time putting the Muskies away. The Eagles scored four runs in each of the first two innings, and added three more in the fourth inning. Alex Daviera recorded two hits and four RBI in the contest, while Cable added two hits and three RBI of her own. Parrot and Kelly Loy combined for five innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits and two walks.
Benedictine honored two seniors in between games, Parrot and Lucy Poro, who drove in a run in game two for the Eagles in her final home game. With the two wins, Benedictine finishes the season with a record of 24-12 and 20-4 in the NAC, finishing second behind Aurora. The Eagles now will move onto the conference tournament, which starts May 2nd.
