The Benedictine softball team continued to cruise through the second half of the season, sweeping Edgewood in a double header on Saturday.
Game one was scoreless until the third inning when Edgewood tallied a run with an RBI single. The Eagles weren’t able to push across any runs until the fifth, when Chelsea White doubled in a run, and Erin Kotlarz drove her in with an RBI sacrifice fly. Eryn Pondo singled up the middle to score another run and Benedictine took a 3-1 lead. Amanda Straka homered in the sixth inning and the Eagles tacked on two more runs in the seventh to take the first game 6-1. Melissa Guzior gave up just the one earned run on four hits and three walks matched with three strikeouts, picking up her 10th win.
In game two, Benedictine wasted no time jumping on Edgewood. Kailee Cable doubled home White. Straka later singled her out to give the Eagles a 2-0 in the first inning. Jackie Diesch provided the answer for Edgewood with a two-run shot to left field, knotting the game at 2-2. However, Benedictine scored four unanswered runs to end the game, starting with a Stephanie Ruvalcaba RBI single in the third. White knocked her second home run of the year in the fourth, making it 4-2. Alex Daviera put the finishing touches on it, singling home a pair of runs in the sixth and the Eagles would finish it out 6-2.
Benedictine has now won 14 out of its last 16 contests and is 19-11 on the year, including 15-3 in conference play. The Eagles will be right back at it on Monday when they host Dominican for a double header, starting at 4:00 p.m.
