Did you hear about Chia Seeds?

By Dana Mourad

The latest buzz is all about chia seeds! This topic has been spreading quickly between talk shows, celebrities, friends, and family; it’s something everyone wants to try. So what are chia seeds and where do they come from? The plant Salvia hispanica is a species of mint plants that is primarily known for its very nutritious seeds. Chia contain a lot of antioxidants that are important for protecting your cells from free radicals that are produced as a result of breaking down food. They’re very important for healthy growth of skin, hair, and nails! Chia seeds are also a very good source for fiber, which is necessary for keeping our digestive system moving.

The fascinating thing about chia is that once the seeds come in contact with water, they have the ability to absorb enough water to become 9 times their original size! (Don’t worry; they are extremely small to begin with). This characteristic makes it an excellent component in a food diet, especially if you’re trying to lose weight. You’ll be full in no time. Feel free to sprinkle it on your yogurt, toss in a fruit or vegetable salad, or even mix it with a fruit or smoothie drink.
