It’s finally that time of year again. When the memory of a month of all that hard work fades away into your mother’s delectable ham and ostentatiously colored deviled eggs. When the breath of spring (apparently not this year!) brings in the traditional bunny, baby chicks icons and pastel colors that now stand in stark contrast to the cold weather. Easter.

Yes, the food, the sweets, the drinks – all sound heavenly, considering we’ve been fasting from at least one of them specifically for 40 days. But what the Candor would like to encourage you to do is rewind just a little bit and think about Lent. What did you change about your daily lifestyle? Did it have a positive effect on you?  Did you avoid sweets and pop and lose a couple of those stubborn pounds? Did you avoid scrolling down your newsfeed in class and begin understanding the lessons more? Did you reduce the amount of cursing you do when interacting with friends?

Well, the Candor would like to challenge you to keep up these positives changes.  If small changes like avoiding coke and texting in class instigated positive results, why stop? Just try to moderate so it doesn’t translate into a dramatic yearlong fast in your mind.  Eat dessert once or twice a week instead of once or twice a day. Try to turn off your phone in at least half of your classes so that you’re not tempted to login into Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr or Instagram (so many distractions!). If it helps, team up with a friend, and set goals together. These changes will eventually just become a daily habit and a part of a better lifestyle.

Life is short and we need to take advantage of every moment and every blessing we have daily. Go chill outside, run, play volleyball. Sign up to volunteer at a food pantry or a nursing home, study harder, prioritize your goals, and most importantly remain patient and smile.

Why hold on to these little things when there are so many other beautiful aspects of this world that we ignore constantly, like nature, a good book, or sometimes even hanging out with friends in person? Lent isn’t simply about fasting from something. It’s about remembering the blessings that we do have. It’s about remembering those who barely have anything to fast from. It’s about giving back. Don’t let the gift of life pass you by. Take a moment and just breathe in the air around you. Appreciate.
