Benedictine University hosted its annual Founders’ Day Celebration events on Friday, March 1st. This event is typically held on the first Friday of March, and it commemorates the founding of Benedictine University by the Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey on March 2nd, 1887.

This event for faculty and staff took place at 2:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. The event was hosted by the Office of the President and the Office of Personnel Resources, according to Mercy Robb, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. There was no fee to attend this event and there were about 300 faculty and staff in attendance for this year’s event. Hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, and cake were served at this year’s Founders’ Day Celebration.

Abbot Austin G. Murphy, O.S.B. began the event with an opening prayer. Alicia Cordoba Tait, D.M.A., assistant to the president for mission integration, presented the Kevin Doyle Faculty Award for Leadership in Mission and Catholic Identity. Later, Dr. Carroll presented certificates honoring 126 years of excellence in education and the University’s founding by the Benedictine monks to faculty and staff.

Later that night, students joined in the celebration with BenU Trivia Night at 7:30 p.m. and DJ party at 9:00 p.m. in Coal Ben.  Many students came to participate and answer questions about the history of Benedictine University.

“Trivia night was a fun and great way for students to celebrate the history of the school we go to,” stated Steve Kositzky, BenU student and attendee of Trivia Night. To follow, the dance party was filled with enthusiastic winners from trivia night and more who stopped into Coal Ben.
