Summer break has officially come to an end and the fall semester has begun! For some of us upper classmen, this is an easy and natural transition. For others, it takes a couple days to get back into the groove of things and get in the school mode. Some say the most important part of the school year is the beginning, so it is wise to get yourself adapted early on so you can be on top of your game and have a successful semester. Here are some things you can do to get yourself back into that school zone for the fall semester at BU:

1.     Adjust your sleep cycle- First things first, fix your sleeping schedule. A lot of us are in the summer habit of staying up late at night and not waking up until noon or later! Well if you have morning classes, it’s best you start going to bed earlier to ensure that you are awake and alert for the class and for the rest of your day.

2.     Buy/ Rent this semester’s books- Personally, this is my least favorite part of going back to school. Textbooks for many classes are getting very expensive these days but there are some ways around it! First of all, if you are planning to buy your books, you don’t have to get them from the Benedictine bookstore. To save some money, a lot of the professors give you the ISBN numbers to the books so you can get them cheaper off websites like Amazon. As for those wanting to just rent their books, websites like Chegg, BookRenter, and CampusBookRentals are great for saving money as well.

3.     Get your school supplies- Basic things to buy include notebooks, binders, folders, pencils, and pens for your classes. It’s a smart thing to wait for your teacher’s individual syllabus in order to buy exactly what they require.  A good strategy to succeed in school these days is organization, so getting color-coded notebooks or buying a binder divider will go a long way for you when trying to organize yourself before all the coursework piles up on you.

4.     Adjust work schedule- Some say it is ideal if you don’t have a job while in college, but for a lot of us students there is no other choice but to work. As the fall semester is beginning, it is important to adjust work schedules around school schedules and have the work be as light on the hours as possible. Unless you’re excellent at time management, working over 30+ hours a week during school is a recipe for a disastrous semester!

5.     Review/Make goals for the year- Make some goals this semester and write them down! Studies at Dominican University of California found that students who wrote down their goals, shared them with others, and maintained accountability for their goals were 33% more likely to achieve them versus those who did not write them down or did not make goals at all. This is a key part to starting off your school year because you will know what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it.
