Men’s Soccer Wins Exhibition Match

The Benedictine University men’s soccer hosted Concordia University-Chicago for a spring scrimmage on Sunday April 22, winning the match 2-1.

The scrimmage marked the debut of new head coach Rich Nassif, who thought the game went well overall.

“We got out of it what we wanted,” said Nassif. “We got off to a slow start because of the windy conditions, but towards the end of the first half and then into the second half the guys were able to get used to the conditions and we started to move the ball well.”

Nassif also liked that his players got a chance to experience a game under him before the season starts in the fall.

“It was good for them so they know what to expect from me on the sidelines,” Nassif said.

The players agreed with this as senior to be Andrew Conniff said that the first game for Nassif was a success.

“I think coach Nassif did a great job in his first game for us,” Conniff said. “I really think this helped us to know what he expects when it comes to games in the fall.”

After a scoreless first half the Eagles were the first to score as freshman Tyler Polanski netted a goal. The second goal for the Eagles came shortly after as fellow freshman Edgar Reyes scored off an assist from Creighton Goss.

Despite the win both Conniff and Coach Nassif believe the Eagles have some work to do going into the fall.

“We need to start working together as a unit instead of a group of individuals, we have a lot of good players, but we won’t be winning in the fall unless we start playing together,” Conniff said.

“I thought that we came out a little tentative, and conceding the last goal was a bit of a disappointment,” Nassif said. “But those are things we will address as we go on.”

The Eagles will open up the 2012 campaign when they travel to New York for games August 31st and September 1st. The home opener for the Eagles will be on September 8th as the Eagles host Alma College at 7 p.m.
