The Benedictine Men and Women’s track and field teams began their 2012 indoor season at the North Central College Cardinal Opener on Friday night.

After a delay due to the winter storm that hit the area, North Central’s men’s and women’s teams swept the event, scoring 347 and 210 points respectively.

The Benedictine men’s team tallied 51 points for a third place finish, while the women’s team earned a fifth place finish with 11 points. Senior Nick McCord placed fifth in the long jump as well as seventh in the 60m dash.

“The meet went pretty well and the team had some overall great performances,” said McCord. “In our first meet out, we had multiple people breaking personal records or getting close to those marks.”

Despite the success from some, the Eagles still feel like there is a lot to improve on from the meet.

“We lacked some depth yesterday [Friday],” McCord added.  We had some people out with injuries, but nothing else went wrong besides the huge weather delay.”

Freshman Natalie Kocks and sophomore Shana Cook posted up impressive numbers in the 800m relay and the weight throw. Also, the men’s 4x400m relay team consisting of sophomore Ryan Serafino, freshmen Zeke Timmer and Jack Adams and junior Tom Brown placed 4th.

The track and field teams will travel to Bloomington, IL from Feb. 3-4 to compete in the Illinois Wesleyan University Keck Invitational.
