The Benedictine Women’s Basketball team was back in action after the Thanksgiving holiday as they defeated Aurora University 80-56 on Saturday in their first Northern Athletics Conference game of the season.

Sophomore guard Michelle Gaede led the team with 20 points as she went 5-7 on three-point attempts. She also had 8 rebounds. Also, freshman guard Katie Hunzinger added 17 points, six assists and four steals, and senior guard Tracey Walsh scored 14 points with five rebounds and three assists.

“What went well is that we reversed the ball really well, and everyone was making great passes to one another,” explained Gaede. “My teammates did a great job driving and kicking, resulting in a wide open outside shot. “

“We also finally out rebounded the team we were playing. We blocked out which we were struggling with which gave us a lot of offensive and defensive boards,” said Gaede. “It was a great win starting out conference play, and hopefully we can use that momentum in our game against MSOE who is a good team.”

The Eagles outscored the Spartans 19-10 on turnovers they also out rebounded them 42-25. It was a bounce-back win from their home opening loss to Carthage University last Tuesday, in which they lost by 20 points.

“We feel great about our start, but are still looking to improve in some areas,” explained Walsh. “We need to continue out rebounding our opponents and try to win every possession. We just need to keep working hard every day at practice to continue making each other better.”

“I feel our team comes to practice looking to get better every day which brings great intensity and competition,” Walsh also added. “I believe we are starting to mesh together as the season is progressing and we just need to take one game at a time.”

The Eagles now stand at 2-3 (1-0 in the NAC) going into Wednesday night’s game against  Milwaukee School of Engineering. BenU will play host to MSOE for this NAC matchup at 7 p.m.
