Timeless charities

By John Pierri

It all started with LiveStrong bracelets. I’m sure we all remember those rubber, yellow bands that took pop culture by storm. Athletes and other celebrities wore them and you were shunned by your peers if you didn’t have one.

If you’re a fan of MTV’s Real World San Diego, you may have seen the new and improved charitable product that will soon take over the world: the Flex Watch. There are already two of them in my house! The creators of the Flex Watch have moved away from the thin silicone bracelets and have now created something that is actually functional, stylish, and instantly recognizable.

“Ten colors, ten charities, ten percent.” That is the company’s motto and it explains its basic formula. The ten colors that the Flex Watches come in are blue, light blue, orange, red, purple, gray, white, black, green and pink. Each different color represents a different charity ranging from spinal cord injuries to cancer support to providing purified water for developing countries. Each watch is $30 and ten percent of each watch purchased goes to its respected charity.

According to, “The Flex Watch is a symbol of a vibrant, active life. It was created to inspire change and will change the industry itself; the Flex is not just a watch, it’s a brand that represents the lifestyle we aspire to lead. The 10-10-10 standard was inspired by a group of individuals hoping to raise awareness through unique colorful products. Our watches embody creativity without sacrificing what is most important: the people.”

Two weeks ago, the Flex Watch appeared on the Real World San Diego. The creators of Flex Watches visited one of the house members that has dealt with multiple suicides in his family. They worked to create a suicide awareness color Flex Watch because of this.

Some other charities that have teamed up with Flex Watches are LHON [black,] The Living Memoir [light blue,] St. Bernard Project [orange,] Nika Water [blue,] Be Perfect Foundation [green,] Breast Cancer Awareness [pink,] First Decents [purple,] Imerian Angels [gray,] Life Rolls On [white] and Mariners Outreach [red.]

In the days following that episode airing, demand for flex watches sky rocketed. In an email I received for ordering my flex watch, it said “Due to an overwhelming positive response, your package will be shipped out within 4-5 business days.” This was the day after it made its reality TV debut.

As a way to spread awareness, Flex Watches offer college students to register to become “Campus Reps.” Campus reps spread the word of the 10-10-10 formula and everything that Flex Watches represent. And, as your BenU campus representative, I’m telling YOU to join the cause and get a Flex Watch!
