The Loss of an Icon Mourning the Death of Steve Jobs

By Nooreen Moinuddin

“Ten years ago, we had Bob Hope, Johnny Cash, and Steve Jobs. Now we have no hope, no cash and no jobs,” reads a popular Facebook and Twitter quote that’s been circulating internet media this past week. Though this seems like a clever joke, people are wondering if that’s what it really is—a joke. The death of Steve Jobs makes us wonder, will Apple continue to thrive? And how will this directly affect, not only Apple employees, shareholders of the company’s stock, and beloved Apple users?

Jobs resigned from his position as the CEO of Apple, due to his Pancreatic Cancer, this past August, but stayed as a chairman on the company’s board. On Oct. 5th, Apple released a statement, confirming Steve Jobs’ death. “We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve,” it read.

The Bloomberg Report showed that Apple’s stock dropped 7% after Jobs’ resignation in August. However, it went back up with the release of the iPhone 4S on Oct. 14th. Though this slight dip affected stocks, loyal shareholders of the corporation have faith that it will go up and stay up. iPhone, iPad and iPod users are living in content as well.

“I got the iPhone 2G when it came out in 2007, and just recently upgraded to the iPhone 4” said sophomore Imran Akhtar. “Those products are made to last, and Apple has great customer service. I’m not worried that I’ll need a new phone any time soon.” Like Imran, Apple users don’t seem worried that Apple will disappear from the face of the Earth.

Although Jobs was a creative genius, his successors and business partners now have a basis to work with. He laid down the premise of what an Apple product is, and now every new one is a bigger and better form of the last. I agree with Apple enthusiasts when they have full confidence that Apple will continue to thrive.

Jobs’ inventions and innovations have forever changed modern technology and the world as we know it. No one could say it better than Steve himself who said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down and it has made all the difference in my life.”

We need to implement this and trust that the dots will connect for us; Apple will never slow down, or God forbid, shut its doors for good. Steve Jobs revolutionized the products that dictate the evolution of modern technology today and his legacy will continue to do so, even after his death.
