What is the big deal about Twilight? And more than that – Why do people care about Kristen Stewart (Bella) and Robert Pattinson’s (Edward) love life so much?
I don’t think that there is an exact answer to the madness. Basically someone introduced Teen Wolf to Underworld, they clicked, things got hot and then they made a baby. Being from the video game generation, I try to understand the logic when I hear two girls telling each other, “Hey, do you want to come over and watch Twilight today?”
“No, I just watched it yesterday and I have to go work out … but I’m not doing anything tomorrow so I’ll watch it then!”
Maybe my expectations are too high for my choices on entertainment but if I’m going to be that excited about doing something, I don’t want to know every word that is going to be said each time I watch the same movie. I actually rarely find myself watching the same movie more than once in the same month unless I am watching it with someone who has never seen it before.
All else aside, I can understand why the movie has became so popular, especially with the “tweenage” girls in America. Edward is what every girl wants – a protective boyfriend who can be there anytime she wants him. Bella is … well, I don’t know why anyone would want to be like Bella I guess. She’s an awkward, somewhat attractive high schooler who has the “cool kid” fall in love with her. She also blindly walks into danger’s way for the “love of her life” that she has met for only a few weeks. I’m sorry, but after watching Kristen Stewart in both this movie and Adventureland, I’ve come to realize that she is a horrible actress and makes every character she plays look so awkward that no guy in his right mind would want to be around her.
Maybe that’s why Twilight didn’t connect with the guys. Get Megan Fox to play Bella and there’s a whole new audience to tap…
I’m more disturbed by the obsession about the actors, not the movie. For pretty much as long as the movie has been out and then some, every tabloid and celebrity gossip magazine has used Stewart and Pattinson’s relationship in some way. I don’t see what all the hoopla is about a pot smoker being in a love limbo with someone who I don’t think has touched his head since he realized girls like “bed head” so much (“Do not touch my hair! Yes, I know it is all over the place, but it does what it wants! Must … keep … the hair … happy …”).
Why are we so obsessed about celebrities? Is it because we want to be in their place, with paparazzi and media taking their picture and prying into their social life every day? Or is it because we secretly think that we will eventually be friends with them, so we’d better know everything that is going on in their life so we know how to connect with them better that day that we finally start hanging out?
Don’t believe the Bella and Edward real life hype? Check out IMDB.com’s STARmeter Top 10 celebrities – http://www.imdb.com/chart/ . Stewart and Pattinson are right up there as the No. 1 and No. 3 top celebrities, beating Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp while Megan Fox is sandwiched at No. 2 between them. Believe the hype now? Look, the day Kristen Stewart beats Megan Fox in anything other than an “awkwardly looking away” contest, I’ll be shocked. I was even going to add the “awkward lip bite” in there, but Megan Fox biting her lip is hot enough to start a small forest fire if not properly controlled.
I don’t think I’ll ever understand why women are so drawn to these characters both on and off screen. However, I know one thing for sure – It is not going to stop anytime soon. The Twilight universe has only begun and there are still two confirmed movies in the works. Believe me, I try to do my part with every groan I make when I see someone reading yet another People article relating to Twilight, but one man is not enough to start a revolution in this altered dimension.
